An argument between two men at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe in Nevada has left one dead. Suspect Edgar Julian Delgado, 24, shot Omar Reyes Garcia with a gun in the casino early Saturday, despite the pair apparently getting on well together earlier in the casino bar.

Due to the incident, Nevada state police made the decision to close Highway 50 in both directions from the casino:

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office later pulled Delgado over on the highway, booked him for open murder, and took him into custody. Police also arrested a woman in the car for driving under the influence.

flagged as an active shooter

Sheriff Dan Coverly of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect and the victim, 32, met in the bar and spent “several hours together.” As per Nevada law, the incident was flagged as an active shooter because it took place in a casino. This was the reason for the highway closure and the presence of 50-100 law enforcement personnel.

The seemingly heavy-handed response is a consequence of the October 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. Sheriff Coverly said while the response may appear “overwhelming and over the top,” it was acceptable for the incident in question.
